Embracing Your Authentic Self: My Journey to Becoming a Self-Published Author

Updated: Oct 19

This week, I officially became a self-published author with my debut book, Unapologetic: Bold Leadership Success Strategies for Women of Color. This is a dream come true!

In May 2025, I felt stuck and unsure of my path forward. Fast forward to now, my book is almost ready to launch. Today, I took some time to reflect on the many lessons I've learned over the last 10 weeks on this journey. I want to share two of those lessons to encourage you to move from feeling stuck to taking steps forward.

Lesson 1: You Don't Have to Have Everything Figured Out

You don't have to have everything completely figured out before taking action. Writing a book was the last thing I planned for this year. I didn’t know the first thing about how to write a book, let alone publish it myself. It seemed so far out of reach in my mind.

I thought I needed to know everything. The truth is, I was just one connection away from the answer. That one connection introduced me to an entire group of women, each with different areas of wisdom and knowledge. This community, which is one of many I am part of, was the key to making it happen. Everything I didn’t know, I was able to learn with their help.

Shrinkage can cause you to operate in a bubble. You must step out of that bubble if you want to achieve your goals.

Lesson 2: Your Breakthrough Lies Beyond Discomfort

Your breakthrough lies beyond discomfort. Confronting your fears is the bravest step you can take. That sense of unease isn’t merely nerves; it’s an indication of your growth.

I not only wrote a book for the first time but also faced my fears of social media. I made posts on LinkedIn and Facebook and participated in a Facebook LIVE session with my group of authors. I felt nervous, afraid, and small, wanting to retreat. However, after embracing the discomfort and sharing the announcements, I received immense support and encouragement from many people.

No one but me was concerned about my lack of social media presence and experience. Shrinking back will keep you stagnant and persuade you to give up. Don’t let discomfort discourage you.

The Power of Community

Connecting with others is vital. The community I found not only provided knowledge but also emotional support. We often underestimate the power of shared experiences. When you surround yourself with uplifting individuals, you open doors to new possibilities.

Have you ever felt like you were alone in your journey? I know I have. But remember, there are others who share your dreams and struggles. Seek them out. Join groups, attend workshops, or simply reach out to someone who inspires you.

Taking Action

I have more lessons to share in future posts. But if you’re feeling stuck and genuinely ready to take action, let me encourage you to step out, connect with others, and embrace the discomfort of trying something completely new. You can do it!
